The City of West Sacramento and the Washington Unified School District (WUSD) have initiated a campaign to install LED Crossing Beacons at high-density crosswalks throughout the city. Eight beacons are being placed at crosswalks adjacent to major student, pedestrian, and bicycle routes. The program receives a majority of its funding from the California Office of Traffic Safety.

“There’s nothing more important than the safety and wellbeing of our students and community members,” said Washington Unified School Board President Alicia Cruz. “The truth is that we can’t expect to make an impact in the classroom when our kids aren’t traveling safely to and from school. That’s why these beacons go a long way to ensure our kids are getting to school safely and ready to learn. The school district’s partnership with the City of West Sacramento on this project plays a key role in keeping students safe and attending school.”

The City activated the first LED beacon Nov. 19th at Linden Road and the Clarksburg Branch Line Trail, used by pedestrians, bicyclists, and students attending River City High School and Our Lady of Grace School. Additional beacons will be added to high-density school and public crossings in West Sacramento.

“The City is pleased to be joining with Washington Unified in this effort to increase the visibility of student school routes,” said Mayor Pro Tem Chris Ledesma, who attended the LED crossing beacon installation. “We want to see our young people reach school and return home safely. Thanks to the state Office of Traffic Safety for its support.”

The West Sacramento Police Dept. also contributed grant funds to the project—funds provided in support of DUI checkpoints and increased roadway enforcement. The City has also identified the importance of adding crossings in its Bicycle, Pedestrian, and Trails Master Plan.
