Dear Yolo County CASA Supporters,
August is National Wellness Month and this year it resonates more deeply than ever. We've been faced with the pandemic of a lifetime and its nowhere near over. Add school starting to the mix, new safety rules among schools, and hybrid learning models, and it's easy to feel a large amount of stress.
Now add to that being a foster child. Even the littlest nuances add stress. For example, many districts are requiring individual students to bring more school supplies this year so that less classroom sharing is required. For foster children, this might not always happen, and could be a great source of stress at the start of an already more stressful than normal year.
I've been comforted this summer by our CASA volunteers. They've all found ways to remain in close contact with their foster children, even if that meant extra physical distancing measures. This continued contact will help our volunteers spot red flags that this new school year might present. After all, the example above is just one of many that I can imagine.
Speaking of the vital role that our volunteers fill, our trainings are now all virtual for the time being. If you've ever felt called to become a CASA volunteer, please fill out an interest form on our website. With indoor dining closed and many other activities modified, now might be the perfect time to fit the training into your schedule... and with domestic violence at an all-time high, our waitlist of children who need volunteers only continues to grow.
I hope you have a nice weekend... and stay safe and healthy.
