COVID-19 Outbreak at Riverbend Nursing Center

Nov 17, 2020 12:00AM ● By Jenny Tan, Yolo County

WOODLAND, CA (MPG) – Yolo County is announcing an outbreak of Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) at the Riverbend Nursing Center, located in West Sacramento. As of November 16, there are 22 confirmed cases (9 residents and 13 staff) with no deaths at this time. This facility previously had 5 confirmed cases in July 2020. Locations like nursing facilities, where people are living in congregate settings and the population served are older or elderly with underlying health conditions, are at the highest risk of being infected. Though there has been a rise in cases at facilities such as this, these cases account for a small number of the County’s total cases. The majority of recent COVID-19 cases in the County stem from community spread, social gatherings and workplace exposures.

Riverbend is making every effort to minimize the exposure of COVID-19. The facility’s utmost concern is for the health and well-being of each resident and ensuring that staff are healthy and able to continue to care for residents. The facility has restricted all visitors in the facility, including vendors, until further notice and will not lift restrictions unless for ‘end of life’ care. The facility is closely monitoring the situation and following the guidance and directives from local health and state certification departments.

Residents and facility staff have all been tested for COVID-19 and will continue to be tested weekly for the duration of the outbreak. In addition to isolating all positive cases and monitoring staff and residents for symptoms, the facility has implemented multiple measures to prevent the spread of COVID-19, including but not limited to:

  • Notifying the California Department of Public Health
  • Communicating with Yolo County Public Health staff
  • Creating donning/doffing stations in buildings for Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
  • Setting up isolation and quarantine units
  • Reviewing all procedures and practices
  • Preparing a testing plan and schedule for all staff and residents
  • Ensuring sufficient supplies and trainings of PPE
  • Launching contact investigations as needed
  • Screening staff for symptoms before the start of each work shift
  • Performing onsite walkthroughs to improve physical distancing
  • Continuing and increasing disinfection techniques
  • Restricting all visitors in the facility, including vendors, until further notice
