WOODLAND, CA (MPG) - Eligible immigrants and their families residing in Yolo County can now safely access CalFresh and Medi-Cal assistance programs without impacting their current immigration status. The federal policy that forced millions of immigrants to forego vital health and economic support services was successfully blocked on March 9, 2021 when the U.S. Department of Justice dropped its legal defense of the 2019 Public Charge Rule. The Public Charge Rule was a means of denying someone a green card, visa, or admission into the U.S. based on how likely they would become dependent on government benefits.
CalFresh is a nutrition assistance program for Yolo County’s low-income households, including households of mixed immigration status. The program provides a monthly financial allotment to help households put healthy and nutritious foods on the table.
Medi-Cal provides needed healthcare services for Yolo County’s low-income individuals and families, including individuals with unsatisfactory immigration status. For individuals that do not meet established income guidelines for Medi-Cal, they may be eligible for the County Medical Services Program (CMSP) that has higher income guidelines.
Residents may find out if they’re eligible and apply for both services online by visiting: www.mybenefitscalwin.org, calling directly at 1-855-278-1594, or going in-person Monday-Friday from 8:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. to any of the four following locations:
